Today’s a different post from usual, since my composer is currently in the midst of lots of projects and other things, so I’m going to be covering for a while, until he composes another great piece for you guys! So, I’ll be writing a review on a song that has been requested by its producer Julien Barnu. I’ve listened to it a few times, and well…read on and you’ll see what I thought of it.

“Visions is a single by the Parisian baroque pop band Breakfast at Your Place. It tells the story of a disturbed girl who finds refuge in an enchanted world of dreams and hallucinations.
Visions was written by Breakfast at Your Place keyboardist Julien Barnu and Breakfast at Your Place cellist Natacha Colmez, who is also a member of the Paris National Orchestra.
The singer, Alexia Papineschi, is a French comedian and dubber that joined the group in 2017. She’s the French voice of Cinderella in the 2015 Disney film.”

The Melancholic Beauty of Escape
So, opinion time…
I like it
Ok, so there are a few things that I do have some criticism for, but that can wait. For now, let’s look at what I like about it. Overall the piece is melancholically beautiful. I can imagine it being used in a dark retelling of a fairy-tale, like Alice In Wonderland…actually, I can see it being used for Alice In Wonderland. It really is a beautiful song, and I wouldn’t mind stealing it for a short film I have in mind (don’t worry, I won’t, besides I haven’t filmed the film!).
Just listening to the instrumental opening, I feel like I’m in a fantasy world, flying across the sky with nothing but the wings on my back (yes, I can see myself with wings, or as a dragon…haven’t decided which yet). When Alexia’s voice breaks through, I can see an innocent little girl traversing a dark, dangerous and frightening forest, full of perils and creatures that would try to kill her. I can see her growing stronger, learning to be a warrior and fighting that big bad at the end.
I’d recommend listening to this song if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, or you’re trying to get over that creative block, especially if you’re a writer. All you need to do is close your eyes and imagine a world far away and it’ll get those words out, one way or another. What makes this song special, and what I love about it, is the story the song tells, not just in the words, but in the music. It gives off a vibe that forces you to go on a journey, not just of self-discovery, but something a little more tangible. It might just bite you with the travelling bug, or send you to worlds in the far reaches of your mind, you never knew existed. Whatever journey it takes you on, enjoy the ride!
There’s No Escaping The Judge
Alright, so here’s the part I’m not too happy about. I’d love to praise this song completely, but my musical mind just can’t get over some things.
Ok, so let’s start with the arrangement overall. While it does progress from one end to the other, it’s not quite as dramatic as it could be. For example, it uses artificial synthetics throughout, besides the cello. Basically, you can tell the backing track was made by a keyboard. It would be nice if it had a few more instruments, or even an orchestra. I think what the piece really needed was a solid drum foundation, rather than just the cymbals and snare drum, with a few claps, there really needed to be the bass drum, to give it that extra depth.
Now, in terms of the vocals, while Alexia sings the piece beautifully, there are points in the song where her singing is rather weak. I think, the reason, I’m not as blown away by her vocals as I know the song should want me to be, is because the song is a bit too high for her. I’ve listened to some of her covers on her YouTube page, and I think if the song had been transposed to a lower note, it would have fit her vocals perfectly. Although having said that, the airy quality of her voice does fit the song quite well, but, to really give the song a dramatic flare, it really needs extra voices, maybe add in a choir part, or add a harmony to the chorus/pre-chorus. Not only would it make the song a little more dramatic, it would also emphasize Alexia’s voice.
My last bit of criticism would be the cello part. While it’s basically the anchor for the song, it shouldn’t be the only instrument that’s showcased in the song. Although it adds to the melancholic atmosphere, if there were a violin counterpart, it would add more drama, or better yet, have a bass or a contrabass. In short, the song needed more bass, it needed that depth to it, so that it could resonate with the core of its listener.
Overall, the song is, as I said before, melancholically beautiful, and in my opinion it’s like a cross between Lindsey Stirling’s style of music, with Within Temptation (two completely different genres but if you listen to it, you’ll probably get what I mean). I think if it were reworked, it would be an awesome theme for a film, or just a really dramatic song in general. In fact, I’m hoping, one day, I’ll be able to commission these guys for a film, if ever I get to writing a fantasy one that would use these songs.
