It’s the last week before advent and I thought it best for us to remind ourselves we’re not just waiting for Christmas, but the inevitable revelation of heaven, and what better symbol of that hope, than an eagle! On Sunday, I was reminded that I’m not only celebrating Jesus’ birth at Christmas, but the hope of being granted the gift of heaven. So, I thought that this hymn was appropriate, before I started arranging Christmas hymns or carols.
It was easy to think about this one. I had been wanting to create an arrangement for this one, for quite a while. I loved this hymn when I was growing up, and so I thought I’d try my hand at it. Of course, it’s a bit messy, because I had to create it at the last minute (I had some issues over the last week or two, so I couldn’t do much), but I think it turned out well, in spite of that.
So without further ado, here is “On Eagle’s Wings”.

Lyrics by Michael Joncas
You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
Who abide in his shadow for life,
Say to the Lord,
“My refuge, my rock in whom I trust”.
And He will raise you up,
On eagle’s wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm,
Of His hand.
The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
And famine will bring you no fear,
Under His wings your refuge,
His faithfulness your shield.
You need not fear the terror of the night,
Nor the arrow that flies by day,
Though thousands fall around you,
Near you they shall not come.
For to his angels He’s given a command,
To guard you in all of your ways,
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
And hold you,
Hold you in the palm,
Of His hand.
